Sir Alex Ferguson was taken to hospital after feeling unwell before Manchester United’s Premier League match against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday. Medical staff treated him inside the stadium before moving him for precautionary checks.
Ferguson arrived at Old Trafford as usual to watch the game from the directors’ box. He reported discomfort before kick-off. Staff assessed him on site and then transferred him to hospital. Sources confirmed the move as precautionary rather than an emergency.
The 82-year-old has attended United matches regularly since his retirement in 2013. He built his legacy across 27 years at the club, winning 13 league titles and two Champions League trophies. He oversaw more than 1,500 matches and collected 38 major honours.
Ferguson suffered a brain haemorrhage in May 2018. He returned to Old Trafford later that year to a standing ovation. He has since maintained a visible presence on matchdays.
United played Liverpool without him in attendance. The home side won 3-2 and secured a return to European competition after a two-season absence.
Head coach Michael Carrick said, “I have no new updates. I heard about it before the match. I felt sorry to hear he was unwell. We wish him good health and hope today’s result gives him a lift.”
