Former deputy education minister Golam Sarwar Milon has died. He was 69.
He breathed his last early Sunday before Fajr prayers. His death has cast a shadow of grief over the country’s political arena.
Golam Sarwar was a multifaceted political figure. He served as deputy education minister (1986–87), member of parliament for Manikganj‑4 (1986–90), chairman of the Manikganj District Council, and presidium member of the Jatiya Party.
He was also the founding president of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (1981–82) and a prominent student leader at Dhaka University.
After a long political career with many turns, he most recently held the post of acting chairman of the Bangladesh Janata Party and was also active as chief coordinator of the National Democratic Front. He earned a place in people’s hearts for his courageous leadership, forthrightness, and patriotism.
In his personal life, he leaves behind his wife Fatema Sarwar, a son, a daughter, and many admirers. His death has plunged family, colleagues, and well‑wishers into mourning.
His first namaz-e-janaza will be held after Zuhr at Singair Government Pilot High School premises in Manikganj.
His second janaza will be held after Asr prayers at Kabiraj Bari Mosque on Nazimuddin Road in Old Dhaka, after which he will be buried beside his father’s grave at Azimpur graveyard in Dhaka.
Born in Azimpur village of Singair upazila, Manikganj, his native village is now silent and grief‑stricken. Different political parties, social organisations, and distinguished individuals have expressed deep sorrow at his death and prayed for the forgiveness of his departed soul.
