Govt to procure 1.8m tonnes of Boro paddy, rice

The government has decided to procure a total of 1.8 million metric tonnes of paddy and rice from the internal market during the upcoming Boro season.

The decision was finalised on Wednesday during a meeting of the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee (FPMC) held at the Secretariat. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, presiding as the president of the FPMC, led the session.

According to the committee’s resolution, the procurement goal includes 500,000 metric tonnes of paddy, 1.2 million metric tonnes of parboiled (Siddha) rice, and 100,000 metric tonnes of sun-dried (Atap) rice.

The government has fixed the collection prices at Tk36 per kg for paddy, Tk49 per kg for parboiled rice, and Tk48 per kg for sun-dried rice.

In addition to the Boro grains, the meeting resulted in a decision to purchase 50,000 metric tonnes of wheat at a rate of Tk36 per kg.

The meeting saw the participation of the State Minister for Food and Public Administration Md Abdul Bari, along with other distinguished members of the committee.

The procurement drive is scheduled to launch in phases, with paddy collection starting on 3 May and rice collection beginning on 15 May. The entire operation will remain active until 31 August of this year.
