Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been included in the 2026 edition of the Time 100, earning recognition in the Artistes category for his continued defiance of censorship and commitment to politically engaged storytelling.

In the magazine’s citation, TIME described Panahi as a powerful voice of artistic resistance who has persisted in making films despite years of legal restrictions and pressure in Iran. His work has consistently explored themes of freedom, repression and everyday life, offering an unfiltered view of society.

Panahi’s career has long been marked by confrontation with authorities, including imprisonment and travel bans. Despite these challenges, he has continued to produce films, often under severe limitations, establishing himself as a leading figure of dissent in contemporary cinema.

His latest film, ‘It Was Just an Accident’, was reportedly shot clandestinely in Iran and examines the lasting human impact of political repression. The film has received significant international acclaim, winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and securing two Academy Award nominations.

While Panahi continues to face legal consequences at home, including sentencing and restrictions on his professional activities, his persistence has strengthened his global reputation as a filmmaker who transforms limitation into creative resistance.

The annual TIME 100 list recognises individuals shaping global culture, politics and society, with Panahi featured alongside prominent figures from across the international entertainment industry.
