A fan died after a fall at Estadio Banorte in Mexico City on Saturday. The incident happened just before the stadium’s reopening match, security officials said.
The venue, also known as Estadio Azteca, was hosting a friendly between Mexico national football team and Portugal national football team. The match was planned as a test event after recent renovation work.
The day was meant to be a celebration. Fans filled the stands as the historic stadium reopened. But the mood changed quickly after the accident.
Officials said the man fell from a box seat area shortly before kickoff and died from his injuries.
The stadium has been renovated for the upcoming World Cup. It is set to host matches for a third time, which will be a new milestone. The ground is now officially called Estadio Banorte, though many still know it as Azteca. The World Cup opening match and ceremony are set to take place here on June 11.
The stadium had been closed for nearly two years for renovation. This match marked its return.
Authorities said the man was intoxicated. He tried to move along the outer structure and jump from the second-floor box area to the first floor. He lost balance and fell to the ground level.
The match ended in a 0–0 draw.
