Two people died after a fire broke out on Thursday morning at a multi-storey building in Chattogram’s Terribazar area.
The victims were identified as Mohammad Yunus, 52, son of Mirzabari in Patiya’s Bodhupur area, and Sulaiman, of Pachuria in Boalkhali union under Patiya Police Station.
Both were employees at the tailor shop where the fire started on the fourth floor of KB Orchid Plaza, a 10-storey building.
Fire service duty officer Rafial Faruk said they received the call at 9:55am and rushed to the scene. After nearly an hour of effort, the flames were fully brought under control by 10:53am.
Several injured were rescued and taken to Chattogram General Hospital and Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared the two men dead.
Officials suspect the fire may have been triggered by an electrical short circuit. Witnesses reported that power had been out since early morning and the fire erupted shortly after electricity was restored.
The Terribazar Business Association said the tailor shop had Tk8–10 lakh in cash stored for staff salaries and Eid bonuses.
KB Orchid Plaza houses a shopping mall on its lower five floors and residential flats above, along with jewelry shops, bank branches, and tailoring businesses.
The fire spread from the fourth floor to the fifth and sixth floors before being contained.
