The country has entered a seven‑day holiday from Tuesday as the nation prepares to celebrate Eid‑ul‑Fitr, sparking a huge travel rush with millions leaving Dhaka and other major cities to join their families in hometowns.
Government offices, courts, and most private institutions remain closed throughout the extended break, intensifying the exodus from urban centres. The final working day before Eid was Monday (16 March).
Depending on the moon sighting, the Eid is expected to fall on 20 or 21 March. To ease travel for holidaymakers, the government added 18 March to the list of holidays, ensuring uninterrupted leave.
The decision, approved at a cabinet meeting, responded to public demand for a continuous break.
Following the approval, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a notice on 8 March declaring 18 March a general holiday.
Citizens now enjoy a full week of Eid vacation from 17 March to 23 March.
