The High Court has directed the authorities concerned to take into custody the ballot papers and other election materials for the Mymensingh-4 and Mymensingh-6 constituencies after petitions were filed challenging the results of the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
A single-member election tribunal bench of Justice Mohammad Ali issued the order on Monday following a hearing.
The petitions were filed by Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, a candidate of Jamaat-e-Islami from Mymensingh-4, and Md Akhtarul Alam, a candidate of BNP from Mymensingh-6, both challenging the declared results.
After hearing the petitions, the court directed the authorities concerned to preserve ballot papers and other relevant election equipment for the two constituencies.
During the hearing, Muhammad Belayet Hossain appeared for Kamrul Ahsan, while Md Shamim Darji represented Akhtarul Alam.
The state was represented by Deputy Attorney General Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman.
The court accepted both petitions for hearing and scheduled the next hearing for 22 June.
Under Section 49 of the Representation of the People Order, 1972, election tribunals are formed within the High Court to hear petitions related to alleged electoral irregularities.
The tribunals are constituted by the Chief Justice of Bangladesh to adjudicate election-related disputes.
