An armed man was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Bandarban on Monday, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a press release.

The deceased was identified as Hlamongnu Marma, 26.

The incident occurred in the Murong Bazar Dakbanglo area of Roangchhari upazila on Monday afternoon.

Security forces seized 143 rounds of ammunition, a short machine gun (SMG), five empty shells, a pistol pouch with 14 rounds, a router, Indian rupees, and other equipment, according to the release.

ISPR said that acting on intelligence, a special team of security forces surrounded a “criminal gang” in Murong Bazar around 5pm. The group took shelter inside a school building and opened fire on the security personnel, prompting them to retaliate.

Later, one person wearing a “JSS” uniform was found injured. He was taken to Bandarban Sadar Hospital with police assistance, where doctors declared him dead.

A local trader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the armed group had been extorting money in Murong Bazar, Kaikkhyang Jhirimukh Bazar, and nearby areas along the Bandarban–Ruma road under the banner of “JSS.”
