A new book highlighting the life and work of legendary lyricist Gazi Mazharul Anwar is set to debut at this year’s Ekushey Book Fair, marking his birth anniversary. Publishers confirmed that the volume was released today as a tribute to the late cultural icon.
Titled ‘Alpo Kothar Golpo Gaan’, the book explores the stories behind a selection of Anwar’s most celebrated songs. Widely regarded as one of the most prolific figures in Bangladeshi music, Anwar wrote more than 20,000 songs spanning film soundtracks, patriotic numbers and modern Bangla music. In addition to songwriting, he enjoyed a distinguished career as a filmmaker, producer and composer, leaving a lasting impact on the country’s cultural landscape.
The volume has been published by Dhaka-based publishing house Bhashachitra, led by Khandokar Monirul Islam. It is the sixth instalment in an ongoing series compiling Anwar’s reflections and writings on music and cinema.
According to the publisher, the latest book revisits the development of Bangladesh’s post-independence film industry through the creation of its songs. It traces Anwar’s collaborations with leading singers, composers, music directors, filmmakers and technicians, while also including personal memories from different phases of his life. The collection aims to provide readers with insight into the artistic and social environment that shaped his work.
Anwar’s son, Sarfaraz Anwar Upol, described the publication as both an act of preservation and documentation. He said that releasing the book is a way of safeguarding his father’s musical legacy and sharing the stories behind many beloved songs with readers. He added that for the past few years, a new volume has been published around Anwar’s birthday, and this edition will also be available at the Ekushey Book Fair.
Gazi Mazharul Anwar, who passed away on September 4, 2022, remains one of the most influential figures in the history of Bangladeshi music and cinema. His lyrics continue to resonate with audiences across generations.
