A mobile court conducted a raid on Shibchar Market in Madaripur to regulate the prices of essential commodities during the holy month of Ramadan.
The raid led by Executive Magistrate Shaikha Sultana, the assistant commissioner (Land) of Shibchar Upazila
On Friday morning, the magistrate donned a burqa to go undercover as an ordinary buyer, visiting various fish, meat, grocery, and fruit stalls to observe market conditions firsthand.
After identifying several irregularities while in disguise, she launched a formal operation that lasted from 10am to 12:30pm.
During the drive, seven shops were fined a total of Tk12,000 under the Consumer Rights Protection Act.
The offences included selling products at inflated prices, underweighting goods, and selling mutton and she-goat meat at the same price. Other traders in the market were also issued warnings by the mobile court.
“I first monitored the market in disguise and then conducted the raid,” said AC (Land) Shaikha Sultana. She confirmed that several shops were penalised and others cautioned, adding that stricter measures would be implemented in the future as these operations are set to continue.
A team from Shibchar Police Station assisted the mobile court during the operation.
