Bangladesh will play in the 2028 T20 World Cup after the ICC confirmed the qualification details in a recent press release. The team’s current place in the ICC Men’s T20I rankings has secured them a direct ticket to the event in Australia and New Zealand.
The ICC said the final list of 12 automatic qualifiers will be decided from the rankings on March 9. This comes one day after the planned final of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Bangladesh are now ninth in the rankings. This puts them in line for one of the last direct spots. Afghanistan, who are tenth, and Ireland, who are twelfth, are also set to qualify in the same way. These teams have no matches left before the deadline, so their positions should stay the same.
There had been worry about Bangladesh’s chances after they missed the current T20 World Cup. The latest ranking update has now cleared that doubt.
Eight teams from the ongoing tournament have already booked their places by reaching the Super Eight stage. Pakistan confirmed the final Super Eight place on Wednesday after beating Namibia. They moved ahead from Group A with India. Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe advanced from Group B. West Indies and England went through from Group C. South Africa and New Zealand qualified from Group D.
Hosts Australia and New Zealand both have automatic entry for the 2028 tournament. New Zealand also earned qualification by reaching the Super Eight.
The last eight places in the 20 team tournament will be decided through regional qualifying events. Each region will receive spots based on its level of competition.
