The law-and-order situation during the 13th national parliamentary election has been described as markedly better than in previous years, and despite a few isolated incidents, no fatalities were reported. In recognition of the law enforcement’s diligence in this regard, a “grand feast” has been organised for police personnel across the country.
The event is being held in phases across all police units, stations, and outposts, with an allocation of Tk395 per person. The menu features polao, roast, beef (or mutton for those who do not eat beef), muri ghonto, and borhani or cold drinks.
Usually initiated by the office of the inspector general of police (IGP), such arrangements have become a customary gesture following major national exercises like elections, with the tradition believed to boost the morale of the force.
Speaking to Times of Bangladesh, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam confirmed the arrangement. “A good arrangement is made after any major task; it is, in effect, a customary practice,” he said. He had taken on the challenge of ensuring a fair election this time, the IGP added, and expressed satisfaction with all members of the force for success in this regard.
The first phase of the so-called “grand feast” was held on Monday afternoon at the Detective Branch on Minto Road, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Headquarters, and Mirpur Police Lines. A cultural programme has also been scheduled for Monday night at Rajarbagh Police Lines.
The subsequent phase of the feast has been arranged for Tuesday across all DMP police stations, outposts, and at the Dhaka Mill Barack.
An inspector from the Tejgaon Division confirmed the matter on Monday, stating that on Monday, station personnel were treated to an “improved diet”, as directed by the DMP.
“This is nothing new,” he added. “This is quite common and has happened before.” Several other constables also confirmed the both the cultural programme and “grand feast”.
Sources indicate that allocations for the feast are made from the headquarters of each police unit, with funds provided through Metropolitan Headquarters, DC offices, Range DIG offices, and the offices of police superintendents.
