Mohammad Siraj thought February belonged to holidays in Germany and Spain, with a Real Madrid match pencilled in, but within 24 hours he stood at Wankhede Stadium helping India beat the USA in the World Cup.
As late as Friday night, Siraj had no plans to travel to Mumbai before the IPL. Then Harshit Rana’s injury ripped up the script and the BCCI pulled Siraj into the squad on the eve of the tournament.
Siraj admitted the call caught him cold. “Suddenly Surya bhai called me and said, ‘Get ready, pack your bags and come,’” he said, before confessing he thought the captain was joking.
The message kept coming. “As soon as I hung up, selector Pragyan Ojha called me and told me everything. It was shocking news,” Siraj said, a reminder of how fast careers can pivot in international cricket.
Siraj leaned on faith to explain the chaos. “What the Creator has written cannot be changed. I came, I played, everything was written already,” he said, framing his recall as destiny rather than drama.
The twist cut straight through his original plans. “There is a Real Madrid match on the 15th and the plan was to go and watch it. Then Ramadan would start,” Siraj said, before adding that events took their own course.
India needed him to lead the attack because Jasprit Bumrah missed the game with fever. Siraj responded by taking responsibility rather than sheltering behind reputation.
India posted 161, a total that demanded control and intent with the ball. Siraj delivered both, conceding 29 runs and taking three wickets in four overs to tilt the game decisively.
There is a long-running view that Siraj shines brightest without Bumrah beside him. This performance only reinforced that idea, with Siraj driving India’s defence through aggression and discipline rather than noise.
