A special army operation in Mohammadpur has arrested a drug trafficker, Raju, 35, and four of his associates.
Authorities seized over 12,000 yaba tablets and Tk15.26 lakh taka in cash in the drive. Large quantities of other narcotics were also recovered.
According to army sources, intelligence gathered from recently arrested traffickers indicated that Raju planned to transport a significant consignment of drugs from Teknaf to Dhaka.
Acting on this information, a special operation was conducted on Wednesday from 2am to 5am in Townhall, Tajmahal Road, and Geneva Camp areas of Mohammadpur.
Raju was captured at approximately 2am on Townhall Road.
Following Raju’s interrogation, further operations in Tajmahal Road and Geneva Camp led to the arrest of his four associates, Roni, 40; Rocky, 32; Suman, 28; and Mohin, 18.
During the raids, authorities recovered 12,030 yaba tablets (estimated market value Tk36 lakh), 710 puria and 400 grams of ganja, Tk15.26 lakh in cash from drug sales, two digital weighing machines, and 12 smartphones.
All suspects and seized items were handed over to Mohammadpur Police Station for legal proceedings.
A senior officer of the 46th Independent Infantry Brigade said, “This successful operation was based on information from previous arrests. The drugs were reportedly intended for Chuwa Selim, another major trafficker. He was not captured this time, but further operations will target the remaining members of this syndicate. Such raids will continue to curb drugs and crime in the capital.”
