BNP standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan has said that former prime minister Khaleda Zia proved throughout her life that the interests of the nation and democracy came first.
Khan made the remarks on Monday as he spoke to journalists after paying respects at the graves of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia.
He said “Many leaders in Bangladesh’s political history had compromised for personal or party gain but Khaleda Zia never made such compromises.”
He said her name would remain etched in the nation’s history.
Khan described Khaleda Zia as a woman who answered the call of millions. He said she transformed from a housewife into a leader who dedicated her life to the welfare of the people and to democracy.
“We have come here to pay our deep respects to her. We have no words to express the feelings of this day,” he told reporters.
He said she sacrificed her own life for people’s rights. He added that she did not practise politics from air-conditioned rooms, but from the streets through struggle.
“Despite all kinds of obstacles, Khaleda Zia never stopped. She moved forward with the people. Her strength was the people’s strength, not the strength of guns,” Khan said.
The BNP leader stated that Khaleda Zia remained on the streets, fought, spoke for the people, and sacrificed her life to secure their rights.
He said “In the history of Bangladesh, democracy, and the struggle for voting and human rights, Khaleda Zia stands as an unique and unforgettable legacy.”
