The winter season has brought good news for consumers in Chattogram, as increased supply of seasonal vegetables has led to a significant drop in prices across city markets.
Vendors say prices could fall further if supplies continue to rise.
A survey of markets in Pahartali, Halishahar, Akbarshah, and Kazir Dewri on Friday revealed lower prices for most winter vegetables.
Medium-sized cabbages are now selling at Tk20-30 each, down from over Tk30 last week. Cauliflower is priced between Tk25-35 depending on size.
Bean prices have also eased, with the newly arrived bean (seeded) variety selling at Tk60 per kilogram, while other varieties are priced at Tk 30-40 per kilogram. Currently, at least four different varieties of beans are available in the market.
Onions remain relatively high, with fresh peeled onions at Tk60–70 per kilogram and imported onions at Tk70-75, though prices have nearly halved compared to two to three weeks ago.
Potatoes have seen a dramatic drop, falling from Tk100-120 per kilogram to Tk20-25. Radish now sells for Tk 30-40 per kilogram, and eggplant prices have dropped by Tk10 per kilogram, now at Tk40-60.
Ripe tomato prices have fallen slightly but remain relatively high at Tk60–80 per kilogram. Leafy greens, including spinach, red amaranth, and radish leaves, are now more affordable at Tk10-15 per bundle.
Other food items, including poultry, eggs, and fish, remain largely stable. Brown eggs sell at Tk 115-125 per dozen. Broiler chicken is priced at Tk155-165 per kilogram, while Sonali chicken costs Tk240-260 per kilogram. Farmed tilapia, pangash, and koi are available at around Tk200 per kilogram, and rohu and katla are priced at Tk300-350 per kilogram, showing little change in recent weeks.
With falling vegetable prices, consumers in Chattogram are enjoying some relief amid rising winter demand.
