Real Madrid were held to a 1–1 draw at Girona, missing the opportunity to move above Barcelona at the top of La Liga. The hosts, now unbeaten in four of their last five league matches, frustrated the visitors throughout with disciplined defending and sharp counter-attacks.

The early stages were cagey, shaped largely by Girona’s deep defensive structure. Arda Güler fired narrowly wide for Real, while Kylian Mbappé squandered a clear chance after being gifted possession.

As the match settled, Girona attempted to involve Bryan Gil, though his decision-making often let them down. At the other end, Vinícius Júnior repeatedly wasted promising openings, before Viktor Tsyhankov forced the game’s first save from Thibaut Courtois.

Real gradually took control of possession but lacked precision in the final third. When they did threaten, Paulo Gazzaniga kept Girona level, producing an outstanding reflex stop to deny Éder Militão’s towering header.

Mbappé briefly thought he had given Real Madrid the lead just before the break, but VAR ruled the goal out for handball. Moments later, Girona struck. Azzedine Ounahi curled a brilliant first-time effort past Courtois to send the hosts into half-time with a 1–0 advantage.

Madrid pushed forward after the restart, but Girona’s two compact banks of four restricted space. Courtois was forced into a superb stop to deny Vladyslav Vanat, preventing Girona from doubling their lead.

The equaliser arrived when Vinícius was brought down by Hugo Rincón in the box, and Mbappé calmly converted the penalty.

Both sides had chances to win it in the final minutes. Vítor Reis headed wide from close range, while Mbappé and Vinícius each failed to take advantage of promising openings. However, neither team could find a decisive late goal.

Girona have now drawn four of the six league matches in which they have scored first this season, and despite another encouraging performance, remain in the relegation zone on goal difference.

For Real Madrid, the point leaves them one behind leaders Barcelona after 14 matchdays, setting up another intriguing title race.
