A multi-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer left nine people dead and around 10 others injured, including four US citizens, on a highway in Mexico’s western state of Jalisco, the Civil Protection agency said on Sunday
The collision occurred on the highway linking the cities of Guadalajara and Tepic, where several vehicles caught fire after the crash. Among those killed were two minors, while the injured included two National Guard personnel who were in serious condition and taken to Magdalena Hospital in Guadalajara, reports Reuters.
Videos shared on social media by local media outlets showed several vehicles engulfed in flames along the highway following the accident.
Jalisco Civil Protection said four injured US citizens, all suffering minor injuries, were transported to Arboledas Hospital in Guadalajara by a private ambulance service from the crash site.
The agency did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the collision or identify the vehicles involved. Authorities were continuing to assess the aftermath of the crash and provide assistance to those affected.
The accident adds to concerns over road safety on Mexico’s major highways, where heavy commercial vehicles frequently share routes with passenger traffic.
Officials have not yet released information on the identities of the victims or the possible causes behind the tractor-trailer crash.
