Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul has said the interim government, led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, is working collaboratively to implement reforms, with nearly half of the recommendations already in effect.
“About 70% of the recommendations made by the six reform commissions on immediate actions can be implemented by December this year,” he said at a meeting of the National Consensus Commission (NCC) held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Sunday.
Representatives from various political parties attended the meeting to discuss different aspects of implementing the ‘July National Charter, 2025’.
Nazrul noted, “We have selected proposals from the six reform commissions that can be implemented immediately, and nearly half of them have already been executed.”
He clarified, “We cannot amend the constitution through an ordinance or executive order. However, some issues presented as constitutional, such as who will chair parliamentary standing committees, can be resolved by simply amending the Rules of Procedure.”
The adviser also pointed out that certain proposals were repetitive or involved routine functions, such as preparing an anti-corruption strategy. “Many reforms are routine tasks; some can be done by executive order, some by ordinance, while a few involve constitutional matters and require broader consensus,” he explained.
Regarding the upcoming election, Nazrul said the government remains committed to holding it in early February. “Once the election schedule is announced, no legal amendments can be made, as they may influence the process. That is why all necessary legal reforms must be completed by November 30,” he added.
Expressing optimism about the path forward, he said, “I am encouraged by today’s discussion. Everyone is seeking a solution based on consensus. If our intention remains to preserve the unity of the mass uprising, prevent the return of fascism, and safeguard the country, finding solutions will not be difficult.”
Nazrul emphasized the importance of unity, stating, “The most important thing is intention. If we are united in our purpose, the way forward will be clear.”
Among others, National Consensus Commission Vice-President Professor Ali Riaz, BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed, Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad, and National Citizen Party Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain spoke at the meeting. Monir Haider, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser involved in the National Consensus formation process, moderated the session.
