A seven-month-old girl died after her father allegedly snatched her from her mother’s arms and threw her to the floor during a family dispute in Turag, Dhaka.
The child, identified as Rafa Moni, died around 3:00pm on Thursday while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Police have arrested her father Kabir Hossain over the incident.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening at Phulbaria slum in Kamarpara area of Turag.
Rafa was the only child of Kabir and his wife Lima Akter. The family originally hailed from Sonaidanga village in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha and had been living in the slum.
Lima alleged that an argument broke out between her and her husband over a family matter on Wednesday evening. At one stage, Kabir snatched the baby from her arms and threw her to the ground.
Local residents rescued the injured child and first took her to a nearby hospital. She was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Wednesday night, where she died the following afternoon.
Family members claimed that Kabir was often unemployed and occasionally used drugs, which had led to tensions in the family.
Turag Police Station Sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan Faisal said police detained Kabir on Wednesday night after receiving information about the incident.
“Preliminary investigation found that the child was allegedly taken from her mother’s arms and thrown to the ground following a family dispute,” he said.
He added that Kabir had been shown arrested in a murder case filed over the incident and that the matter was being investigated.
