Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) seized six buses of Thikana Paribahan on Saturday night after one of their fellows was allegedly pushed off a moving bus near the university’s entrance on the Dhaka–Aricha highway.
The incident occurred around 9pm, leaving Mamun, a student of the Government and Politics Department’s 53rd batch, injured in the hand and knee.
He said he boarded a Thikana Paribahan bus from Bishmail around 7:30pm. When he tried to get off at Dairy Gate, a bus helper misbehaved with him, insisting JU students should not be allowed on board. During the altercation, another helper allegedly pushed him off the moving bus.
In protest, JU students blocked the Dhaka–Aricha highway and seized six buses of the company, later handing over the keys to police.
JU Proctor Prof Rashidul Alam condemned the incident, saying a written complaint has been received and action will be taken against those responsible.
He also said that transport authorities had previously been warned against mistreating students, but drivers and helpers continued their misconduct.
A staff member of Thikana Paribahan said efforts are underway to identify the helpers involved, and necessary measures will be taken if the allegations are proven.
