Four people were killed and at least 10 injured when a bus lost control, hit a road divider, and collided with an Akash Paribahan bus in Dhaka’s Norda area early Wednesday.
The accident occurred around 6am near Notun Bazar. The driver and helper of the Islam Paribahan bus fled the scene. Victims were rescued and taken to different hospitals in the city.
The dead were Laiju Begum, 38, and her husband Kabir Jamaddar, 47, of Mongla in Bagerhat, Khushi Begum, 35, and Robiul Islam, 22, of Mirzaganj in Patuakhali.
The injured, several critically, and are being treated at Kurmitola and Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Nesar Uddin, sub‑inspector of Bhatara Police Station, said the Islam Paribahan bus, coming from Patuakhali, lost control at Notun Bazar, broke through the divider, and hit the Akash Paribahan bus heading from Uttara to Gulistan.
The Akash Paribahan bus was crowded with passengers, while the Islam Paribahan bus carried only five to seven people.
Police said efforts are underway to trace the driver and helper of the Islam Paribahan bus.
