Three police officers were fatally shot and two others critically injured Wednesday during a domestic-related follow-up in southern Pennsylvania, authorities confirmed. The shooter was killed in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement.
The incident occurred in the rural area of North Codorus Township, roughly 115 miles west of Philadelphia and near the Maryland border, where officers had arrived to investigate a case that began the previous day., reports AP from NORTH CODORUS, Pennsylvania.
“This is an absolutely tragic and devastating day,” Governor Josh Shapiro said during a press briefing. “We mourn the loss of three dedicated officers who served their county, their Commonwealth, and their country. This type of violence is unacceptable, and we must do better as a society.”
The shooting is one of the deadliest attacks on law enforcement in Pennsylvania this century, recalling a 2009 ambush in Pittsburgh that claimed the lives of three officers responding to a domestic disturbance, reports AP
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris described the grief as “unbearable” but assured the public of a thorough investigation. Dozens of emergency vehicles escorted a procession to the coroner’s office, while local residents lined the road waving American flags in tribute.
Eyewitness Dirk Anderson, who lives across the road from the scene, said he heard multiple gunshots while working in his shop. “It was quite a few shots,” he said. “Then we saw helicopters and a large police presence.”
The two officers who survived were hospitalized in critical but stable condition at York Hospital. Authorities have withheld the identities of the shooter and officers, citing an ongoing investigation.
Governor Shapiro and other officials met with the families of the slain officers, who expressed pride in their loved ones despite their grief. U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi described the attack as “a scourge on our society” and confirmed that federal agents were assisting local law enforcement.
The rural road where the shooting occurred was temporarily closed, with police vehicles securing the perimeter surrounded by barns, farms, and fields of corn and soybeans.
“This tragedy underscores the urgent need for better mental health support and community safety measures,” Shapiro said. “We must prevent situations where individuals believe that violence is the answer to their problems.”
The shooting marks yet another violent incident targeting law enforcement in Pennsylvania, following a February attack at a hospital that left an officer dead. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s deadly encounter.
