Three members of a family were critically burnt in an explosion suspected to have been caused by a gas leak at a home in Narayanganj Sadar on Friday morning.
The injured are Maidul, 24, his wife Beauty, 22, and their son Maruf, 8. All three were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in critical condition.
Shaon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the institute’s emergency department, said the explosion occurred when a match was lit to light a cigarette inside a room of the house.
Initial findings suggest gas had accumulated inside the room following a leak and ignited when it came into contact with the flame.
Maidul suffered burns to 85 per cent of his body, Beauty 90 per cent and Maruf 80 per cent, according to the doctor.
All three remain in critical condition, he said.
Meanwhile, Abdullah Al Arifin, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said work is underway to investigate the cause of the fire.
He added that it is initially suspected that the fire originated from a gas leak that had accumulated inside the room. However, exact cause of the fire can only be confirmed once the investigation report is received.
