The Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has conducted a mobile court operation, evicting approximately 200 illegal makeshift shops to reclaim the city’s footpaths and roads.
The drive, carried out on Saturday, spanned the area from the New Market intersection through Omar Chand Road to Sadarghat Road. The operation was led by Special Magistrate (Joint District and Sessions Judge) Md Soweb Uddin Khan.
According to City Corporation sources, the initiative was undertaken to ensure the unhindered movement of the general public by freeing pavements and roads from illegal occupation. The magistrate stated that the drive followed the directives of Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain.
The magistrate noted that illegal structures and “tong” shops were significantly obstructing pedestrian movement and contributing to increased traffic congestion in the city. He further warned that legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to re-occupy the footpaths or roads following the eviction, adding that regular mobile court operations would continue across various areas of the city.
During the drive, illegal iron angles installed over a drain in front of the Peshawar Dalim Hotel were removed and seized. Additionally, traders in the Omar Chand Road area were cautioned against occupying footpaths for business purposes.
Magistrate Khan urged city residents to play a proactive role in keeping roads and pavements free from encroachment. He encouraged citizens to protest against illegal occupations and report such instances to the City Corporation. He remarked that a clean, disciplined, and liveable Chattogram could be established through the coordination of administrative action and public awareness.
Relevant officials and employees of the Chattogram City Corporation, along with members of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police, assisted in the operation.
