A Mymensingh court on Wednesday sentenced two people to death and handed life imprisonment to 10 others for the murder of deed writer Abu Zakaria Mintu in Bhaluka upazila 13 years ago.
Judge Farhana Ferdous of the Mymensingh Special Judge Court delivered the verdict in the afternoon.
The death row convicts are Md Farid and Md Masud Mia. The court also fined each of them Tk30,000.
The 10 others sentenced to life imprisonment were fined Tk50,000 each. They will have to serve an additional six months in prison if they fail to pay the fine, according to the verdict.
According to the case documents, Abu Zakaria Mintu was hacked to death on August 14, 2013, over a long-standing dispute related to land.
The following day, Mintu’s wife filed a murder case accusing 16 people.
After completing an investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against the accused to the court.
The court delivered the verdict after 13 years of proceedings, during which it recorded witness statements and heard arguments from both the prosecution and the defence.
