2.5 lakh metres of banned nets seized in Chandpur

Authorities seized 2.5 lakh metres of new, unused banned current nets from a shop in Haimchar upazila of Chandpur and later destroyed them by burning.

The nets were recovered from Ishaanbala Bazar under Nilkamal Union, west of the Meghna River.

Haimchar Upazila Assistant Fisheries Officer Md Mahbub Rashid confirmed the matter on Monday.

Haimchar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer ABM Ashraful Haque said “A joint drive was conducted under the ongoing sanctuary and jatka conservation campaign.”

“The operation took place from 3pm to 9pm on Sunday. Officials from the upazila administration, senior upazila fisheries office and Coast Guard carried out the drive at a shop owned by Joynal Abedin in Ishaanbala Bazar” he added.

During the operation, the team seized an estimated 2.5 lakh metres of new current nets. However, they could not detain anyone in connection with the incident.

Later that night, the seized nets were burned in the presence of Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Dipankar Barai at a field adjacent to the Coast Guard Noyani outpost pontoon in Haimchar.

Contingent Commander Md Nasir Uddin of the Coast Guard Haimchar Noyani outpost, along with other members, was present during the drive.
