Eleven police personnel have been suspended in Kishoreganj after an internal probe confirmed that they provided undue privileges to former National Board of Revenue (NBR) member Motiur Rahman, already infamous in Bangladesh for the so-called “goat scandal.”
The suspended officers are Sub-Inspector Abul Kashem and constables Moniruzzaman, Kabir Hossain, Imran, Nirjan Khan, Shamim Alam, Rony Hossain, Shariful Islam, Tanvir Rahman, Abu Sayeed Mia, and Rabindra Das. Kishoreganj District Police Office issued the suspension order on Saturday.
According to the investigation report, Motiur, who is in Kishoreganj jail in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission, was taken to Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court on August 12 for a hearing. On the return trip, the police escort arranged a private dining room for him in exchange for bribes, while other policemen ate in a common area.
The incident triggered the formation of a three-member inquiry committee led by an additional superintendent of police. The probe found the allegations to be true, leading to the suspension of the 11 personnel, who have since been attached to the police lines.
Kishoreganj Superintendent of Police Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury confirmed the action.
