Workers and employees staged a seven-hour hunger strike on Saturday in front of the Chattogram Press Club, protesting the government’s decision to lease out the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) and Laldia Char at the Chattogram port.
Beginning around 9am, they under the banner of Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad (SKOP) continued the demonstration until 4pm.
During the protest, the SKOP leaders warned that if the decision to lease the NCT and Laldia Char is not immediately scrapped, they will enforce tougher movements including hartal in Chattogram, and blockade at the port.
The protesters also condemned a recent public notice issued by Chattogram Metropolitan Police banning rallies and processions in the city. They said no legitimate movement can be suppressed through administrative orders or police pressure, declaring that workers will continue their struggle unitedly to protect national interests and their rights.
SKOP central leader and Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal President Md Anwar Hossain, Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal Chattogram Divisional General Secretary and former Port CBA General Secretary Kazi Sheikh Nurullah Bahar, TUC Central Organiser Fazlul Kabir Mintu were present at the event.
