A 44-year-old woman was rescued from the moving “Kurigram Express” train and one suspect was arrested after she made a tearful call to the national emergency helpline number 999 on Monday night.
During the call, the victim said that she was raped by three men on the moving train.
Upon receiving the call, 999 operators determined the position of the train and immediately notified Pabna’s Santahar Railway Police Station, the train’s next stop, to take urgent necessary action.
The call was received by 999 operator Constable Md Kaif Shah, while 999 Police Dispatcher ASI Tarun Kumar Acharya maintained constant communication with both the caller and the police station.
According to police sources, the victim had boarded the Kurigram Express at Dhaka Airport station without a ticket, intending to travel to Sirajganj.
She was questioned by two members of the Railway Security Force, to whom she disclosed her destination.
Subsequently, the train’s canteen boy and two other accomplices led her to the canteen boys’ room under the pretext of offering her a seat, where they raped her.
Following the alert, a team from the Santahar Railway Police Station rescued the victim when the train arrived at Santahar station.
The police arrested one of the accused, identified as canteen boy Abu Bakkar Siddique, 22, son of the late Masud Rana, of Abdulpur under Lalpur police station in Natore district. Efforts to arrest the remaining two suspects are currently ongoing.
A case has been registered in connection with the incident.
