Deep within the arid Coachella Valley of California, a self-declared sovereign territory known as the Republic of Slowjamastan has emerged, attracting more than 25,000 citizens and enforcing a strict constitutional ban on the wearing of Crocs.
The 11-acre micronation, situated between the Mexican border and local date palm farms, is the brainchild of Randy Williams, a San Diego radio programme director known to listeners as “R Dub”, reports BBC.
Williams, who set out on a mission to visit every United Nations-recognised country, founded the territory in 2021 after global pandemic lockdowns halted his travel plans.
A desert dictatorship
Williams, who formally identifies as the “Sultan of Slowjamastan,” purchased the undeveloped plot of scrubland for $19,500. What began as a creative project has evolved into a functioning micronation with its own border checkpoints, minted currency, and a national anthem set to the melody of Elton John’s Rocket Man.
The republic is divided into several states, including Dublândia and the Queendom of Hotdamnastan. To protect its borders from smuggling, the nation maintains a “navy” consisting of a retired submarine named the SS Badassin.
National laws and identity
Life in Slowjamastan is governed by a series of unique statutes. Beyond the prohibition of Crocs, “reply-all” emails are strictly forbidden by law. Speeding is only permitted if the driver is “racing home with tacos,” and the raccoon has been designated as the official national animal.
The Sultan, often seen in a military-style uniform reminiscent of the theatrical attire of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, adopts a “general foreign accent” when performing his duties.
Despite the “dictatorship” branding, Williams insists the project serves as an escape from the political divisiveness seen on platforms like Facebook. “Slowjamastan is the escape from all of that,” he stated, noting that all political discussions – other than the micronation’s own – are forbidden.
Global interest and Bangladeshi surge
The appeal of the desert republic has reached far beyond California. Citizenship is free and can be obtained via an online form, though those seeking formal titles, such as “Member of Parliament” or Ambassador, are required to pay a fee.
According to the Sultan, the nation’s population is truly international, with citizens hailing from 120 different countries. Notably, Williams highlighted a recent surge of applicants from Bangladesh as proof that the micronation’s message “knows no borders”. Currently, United States citizens comprise approximately 50 per cent of the total population.
Looking toward 2027
While the territory currently lacks overnight accommodation, a symbolic sign at the site promises the “Randy Williams International Airport – coming soon(ish)”.
The republic is prepared to take a more prominent role on the global stage next year as it hosts MicroCon 2027. The summit will bring together delegates from over 43 self-proclaimed states to discuss geopolitical sovereignty and the design of arms. Due to the lack of infrastructure in the desert, the event will be held in a skyscraper in San Diego.
“Slowjamastan doesn’t belong to me,” Williams remarked, before playfully noting his status as a dictator. “It really belongs to everyone. It means something different to every single person”.
