The Westfield Ultrasound Academy, a facility equipped with modern amenities, was officially inaugurated at Panthapath in the capital today. The academy aims to play a vital role in improving the quality of healthcare through the provision of skilled ultrasonogram training.

The journey of the academy began with a colourful ceremony held at its campus at 10:00 am on Friday.

Professor Dr Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan, the vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Open University (BOU), attended the event as the chief guest and formally inaugurated the academy.

Addressing the ceremony, the vice-chancellor stated that ultrasonogram is an extremely important and effective diagnostic method in modern medicine.

He emphasised that quality ultrasound training for doctors is a demand of the time, noting that technology-based skills make physicians more confident and effective in diagnosing diseases.

Professor Dr Khan further highlighted that in developed countries, many doctors utilise ultrasound facilities in their own chambers, which results in faster and more effective diagnosis. “This saves the patient’s time and increases trust and confidence in the physician,” he added.

The vice-chancellor pointed out that such services are currently largely urban-centric and urged for these facilities to be extended to marginalised populations. He called for the expansion of humanitarian services through skill development, promotion, and awareness activities.

He expressed his hope that, similar to how Bangladesh Open University works with education and human service, the Westfield Ultrasound Academy would play a significant role in skill development and humanitarian efforts to improve the country’s healthcare standards.

The ceremony was chaired by Dr Kaniz Fatema (MBBS, M-Phil, Nuclear Medicine and Allied Science), Course Co-ordinator of Westfield Ultrasound Academy.

Professor Dr Md Nazrul Islam, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Medical University (Chairman of the Department of Radiology and Imaging) and Vice-President of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), and SM Motiur Rahman, New Market Thana President of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, addressed the event as special guests.

Other invited speakers included TM Ahmed Hussain, Registrar (Acting) of BOU; Professor Dr Sarker Md Noman (Medical Science) of the School of Science and Technology, BOU; and eminent physician Mustafizur Rahman.

The programme was vibrantly moderated by Fazle Bari Shohel and Papri, with various doctors and dignitaries in attendance.

The academy is located at Good Luck Centre (2nd Floor) on Green Road, adjacent to the Panthapath signal. It is set to conduct specialised courses designed to enhance the professional skill development of doctors.
