Bangladesh marked 54th Victory Day on Tuesday with day-long programmes across the country, as people from all walks of life paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War.
Country people reaffirmed their commitment to the spirit of independence through commemorations, parades, discussions and cultural events.
The day was observed with state and community programmes in Nilphamari, Barishal, Cumilla, Narail, Jashore, Meherpur, Netrakona, Tangail, Chuadanga, Magura, Kishoreganj, Dinajpur, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi and Lakshmipur, among other districts, reflecting a nationwide display of remembrance, respect and celebration.
In Nilphamari, the day began at dawn with a 31-gun salute, followed by the hoisting of the national flag and floral tributes at the Independence Memorial.
District administration officials, police, freedom fighters and representatives of political, social and cultural organisations paid homage to the martyrs before observing a minute of silence and offering prayers.
Various educational and cultural programmes were held throughout the day.
Barishal witnessed large public participation as floral tributes were placed at the Shaheed Muktijoddha Memorial from early morning.
The district administration organised a parade and display at Bell’s Park, while political parties, brought out victory rallies.
Discussions and cultural programmes were also held, with speakers highlighting the need for a democratic and discrimination-free Bangladesh.
In Cumilla, the observance began with a 31-gun salute at the Town Hall premises, followed by tributes at the Central Shaheed Minar.
The district administration and police led the commemorations, while political parties and social organisations joined later.
A parade and display by students at the Cumilla Stadium, alongside film screenings and competitions, marked the day.
Narail observed Victory Day with due solemnity as floral wreaths were placed at the Shaheed Memorial under the leadership of the district administration.
Prayers were offered for the martyrs, followed by a parade and physical display at Bir Shreshtha Noor Mohammad Sheikh Stadium, attended by government officials, police and representatives of various organisations.
In Jashore, the day began with a 31-gun salute at the Monihar Victory Monument.
The district administration, police, freedom fighters, political leaders and representatives of numerous institutions paid tribute.
A parade and display were organised at Shams-ul-Huda Stadium, while freedom fighters and families of martyrs were honoured at a discussion meeting later in the morning.
Meherpur, historically significant as the birthplace of the Mujibnagar Government, observed the day with parades, displays and tributes at the Shaheed Memorial.
The district administration hoisted the national flag at the stadium, released pigeons as a symbol of peace and organised discussions, cultural programmes and receptions for freedom fighters.
In Netrakona, the day was marked by floral tributes at the Shaheed Memorial, parades, victory fairs and cultural events.
Freedom fighters were honoured, and children participated in art and essay competitions focusing on the Liberation War.
Tangail observed Victory Day with a 31-gun salute, flag hoisting and tributes at multiple memorials across the district.
A parade and display were held at Shahid Maruf Stadium, while discussions, prayers and cultural programmes took place throughout the day.
Chuadanga marked the occasion with tributes at the Liberation War Memorial, followed by a parade at the old stadium.
Freedom fighters and families of martyrs were honoured, and discussions and cultural events were organised to engage the younger generation.
In Magura, the district administration led tributes at the Shaheed Memorial early in the morning.
A parade, sports events, victory fair, cultural programmes and documentary screenings were held as part of day-long observances.
Kishoreganj saw widespread participation as tributes were paid at memorials across the district. Parades, displays and receptions for freedom fighters were organised, alongside special prayers at religious institutions.
In Dinajpur, members of the Journalists’ Union paid floral tributes at the Shaheed Memorial, reflecting the media’s role in upholding the values of the Liberation War.
Pirojpur and Jhalokathi marked the day with 31-gun salutes, parades and tributes at memorials, while Lakshmipur observed Victory Day with wreath-laying ceremonies, rallies and discussions organised by the district administration and various organisations.
Across the country, Victory Day programmes concluded with prayers for the martyrs, cultural performances and renewed calls to uphold the ideals of independence, democracy and national unity.
