US Ambassador Brent T Christensen on Saturday expressed the United States’ commitment to further strengthening people-to-people ties and mutual understanding with Bangladesh.
Speaking to reporters at Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park in the capital’s Gulshan, the ambassador said the US aims to share more of its history and values with the Bangladeshi people. “We believe the story of America has inspired many across the world, including many here in Bangladesh,” he remarked.
According to the press release, the ambassador made these comments during his visit to the “American Fair,” an event celebrating Freedom 250. The fair was organised in association with the Gulshan Society. During the visit, Christensen was accompanied by Gulshan Society President Barrister Omar Sadat.
The US Embassy in Dhaka had previously announced the launch of “America Week 2026”, a seven-day, multi-city celebration taking place in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, and Rajshahi. This initiative honours the 250th anniversary of American independence as part of President Donald Trump’s Freedom 250 initiative.
Highlighting the significance of the day, the ambassador said, “Today is our real birthday. It’s exciting to be here. We’re having great celebrations across Bangladesh.” He described the events as a “fantastic experience” and a way to bring a “taste of America” to local communities by sharing history, values, and ideals.
The “America Week” celebrations include several signature events designed to bring US culture directly to the Bangladeshi public. Among these are the “Freedom 250 Concerts” featuring the US Army’s 25th Infantry Division Brass Band, which the ambassador described as “fantastic collaborations”. Other activities include the launch of a Founders Museum exhibit in Sylhet and various events scheduled across the country.
Speaking on the collaboration, Gulshan Society President Barrister Omar Sadat emphasised the importance of diplomatic engagement at the community level. “There are embassies of various countries in the Gulshan area. We want to work with them to strengthen relations with the countries by collaborating with them in various events,” he said.
