After 15 years in limbo, Razibul Hossain’s ‘Unadittya’ has been recovered and given a new life. The film’s hard disk was stolen shortly after completion, but recently resurfaced, allowing Hossain to re-edit the work and release its trailer.
The cast includes Runa Khan, Samu Chowdhury, Mahdi Mainul, Rakibul Hossain, Joy Raj, Nowsher and Rana. The film is produced by the Asian Institute of Media and Communication Bangladesh.
According to Hossain, Unaditya and Balughari were the first Bangladeshi films made using digital media. Both have now been remastered, with Unaditya available in 5K resolution and 5.1 Dolby digital sound.
The film follows Khalid Saikat, a young photographer who visits an Oraon village and encounters Arun Khalko, a missionary and convert from the Oraon community.
Arun dreams of building schools, farms and hospitals, but his converted identity leaves him estranged from his own people. Aarti, a teacher, is drawn to him yet remains deeply rooted in her culture.
As preparations for the Phagua festival unfold, Khalid witnesses a community caught between tradition and change. Observing but never interfering, he questions whether truth can ever be captured within a frame, or if it always lies beyond it.
Unadittya had its world premiere at the 2nd South Asian Film Festival in Goa in 2008 and was later screened at the Third Eye Asian Film Festival in Mumbai (2009) and the Human Rights Film Festival in Dhaka (2009).
