Matteo Guendouzi was involved in heated scenes after Fenerbahce booked their place in the Champions League with a 2-1 win over Lyon.
Fenerbahce won the tie 3-2 on aggregate. They have now reached the Champions League league phase for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
Vedat Muriqi and Archie Brown scored for the Turkish side in the second leg.
Malick Fofana pulled one back for Lyon in the second half. But the French side could not find another goal to save the tie.
Tension rose after the final whistle.
Players and staff from both teams clashed on the pitch. The trouble later continued near the tunnel.
Guendouzi added to the tension when he shouted “Allez l’OM” towards a camera. The words showed support for Marseille, one of Lyon’s rivals.
Videos on social media also appeared to show someone wearing Lyon clothing confronting Guendouzi as he walked towards the tunnel.
More players, staff and security then became involved.
Guendouzi later said Lyon supporters had insulted him and his family during the match.
“I felt disrespected by the fans. They were insulting my family. If we can’t celebrate the way we want afterward, I find that disappointing,” Guendouzi said.
Fenerbahce coach Ismail Kartal supported his midfielder after the incident.
“As a team we all stood together to support Guendouzi. Support was provided. That is what teamwork is all about,” Kartal said.
The victory means Fenerbahce will now play in the 36 team Champions League league phase.
The draw will take place in Monaco.
