BNP Standing Committee member and Prime Minister’s political adviser Mirza Abbas has been acquitted in 15 corruption cases filed over alleged irregularities in the allocation of 18 abandoned government houses.
The court acquitted all accused in the cases, said Mirza Abbas’s lawyer Mahi Uddin Chowdhury. Three defendants had died during the trial, he added.
Judge Muhammad Kamrul Hasan Khan of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court‑3 delivered the verdict on Thursday.
In March 2007, the Anti‑Corruption Commission filed a case with Motijheel Police Station against former minister Mirza Abbas and 11 others, alleging that 18 abandoned government houses were sold at abnormally low prices through manipulated tenders.
On 20 September that year, a charge sheet was submitted. It alleged that the accused profited financially by selling the houses at prices far below their actual value through collusive bidding, causing a loss of Tk127 crore to the state.
Later, another 14 people were added as defendants accused of benefiting from the scheme. The court eventually framed charges against Mirza Abbas and a total of 21 individuals, ordering the trial to begin.
