Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-10) personnel have arrested two members of the extremist Sarbahara Group during separate raids in the Rajbari Sadar and Goalanda Police Station areas.
The team recovered two foreign-made firearms, 34 rounds of live cartridges, and other items during the operations. The arrestees have been identified as Md Momin Molla, an expatriate living in Saudi Arabia, and Hasan Ali Biswas.
Additional DIG Md Asaduzzaman, commander of RAB-10, disclosed the details during a press conference held on Thursday at the RAB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar. He stated that the arrests were made on Wednesday night based on specific intelligence.
Besides the firearms and ammunition, law enforcement seized local weapons, knives, four mobile phones, and Tk15,000 in cash from the suspects’ possession.
According to RAB, the suspects are affiliated with the extremist Sarbahara Manju Jahangir Group. While they have not yet disclosed the source of the weapons during primary interrogation, one of the recovered firearms is a Sterling submachine gun manufactured in the United Kingdom.
Additional DIG Asaduzzaman noted that although the weapon is old and currently rare, its capacity to cause harm remains highly effective.
Responding to a query regarding a potential rise in illegal arms in the country, the RAB-10 Commander said, “We do not believe there is an increase in the clattering of arms.”
He assured that every instance of recovering weapons or bomb-like objects is being investigated with the highest priority, alongside intensified intelligence surveillance and ongoing field operations.
The authorities confirmed that a remand application will be submitted to the court. “Through interrogation under remand, important information regarding the source of the arms, the supply network, and those involved will be obtained,” the commander added.
