Two Bangladesh Army peacekeepers from Kurigram were among six soldiers killed in a terrorist attack at a United Nations peacekeeping base in Sudan’s Abyei region.
The two soldiers, identified as Mohammad Mominul Islam, 38 and Shanto Mondol, 26, had spoken to their families just hours before the attack, assuring them that they were safe.
Mominul Islam, hailing from Parulerpar village in the Pandul Union of Ulipur, and Shanto Mondol from Satmadhai Dararpur village in Rajarhat, both joined the peacekeeping mission recently.
Mominul had been in Sudan for 33 days, while Shanto arrived there on 7 November. They communicated with their families through video calls, but tragically, both were killed in the assault later that night.
Mominul’s family, including his wife and two daughters, was devastated by the news.
His father, Abdul Karim, expressed his sorrow, recalling how Mominul had spoken to them on the afternoon of the attack.
Shanto’s family, especially his mother, Sahera Begum, was overcome with grief, as his younger brother Sohag Mondol, also a soldier, awaits the return of his body.
The attack occurred on 13 December when armed terrorists launched a drone strike at the Kadugli Logistics Base, killing six Bangladeshi peacekeepers and injuring at least eight others.
The incident was confirmed by the Inter-Services Public Relations and the Bangladesh Army’s official social media pages.
