Two Muslim‑majority nations, Tunisia and Turkey, have announced the date of Eid‑ul‑Adha, one of Islam’s most significant religious festivals.
Both countries confirmed that Eid will be observed on 27 May. According to Gulf News, Tunisia was the first country worldwide to make the announcement officially.
As per the Arabic calendar, Monday (18 May) marks the first day of the month of Dhu Al Hijjah. Since Eid‑ul‑Adha falls on the 10th of Dhul‑Hijjah, the date has been set for 27 May.
It is notable that Turkey determines the date of Eid based on scientific calculations rather than moon‑sighting.
Meanwhile, the International Astronomy Center (IAC) in Abu Dhabi, UAE, said that the crescent moon of Dhu Al Hijjah is likely to be visible on 17 May.
In that case, the moon could be sighted with telescopes in parts of East Asia, South Africa, and South America. According to IAC’s calculations, Eid‑ul‑Adha is most likely to be celebrated on 27 May in most countries worldwide.
