A truck driver was seriously injured after a robbery on a highway in Kushtia occurred early Saturday. Masked assailants stopped a vehicle and attacked the driver late at night.
The incident took place around 1:30am in the Shantidanga area of the Kushtia–Jhenaidah highway under Islamic University Police Station in Kushtia Sadar Upazila.
The injured driver was identified as Alamgir Hossain, son of Saheb Ali Morol of Majidpur area in Keshabpur Upazila of Jashore.
Police and eyewitnesses said Alamgir Hossain was driving a truck loaded with dried fish from Jashore to Rangpur when a group of masked robbers intercepted the vehicle in Shantidanga.
The attackers beat the driver and slashed him indiscriminately with sharp local weapons, leaving him seriously injured, they said.
The robbers took Tk700 in cash from him and assaulted him again while demanding more money.
Hearing his screams, local people rushed to the spot, prompting the robbers to flee.
Police later rescued the injured driver from the scene and admitted him to Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital.
Hospital Residential Medical Officer Hossein Imam said the driver had sustained injuries to his hand and suffered heavy bleeding initially.
“He is now out of danger,” he said.
Confirming the incident, Islamic University Police Station Officer-in-Charge Masud Rana said police were investigating the matter. Efforts were underway to identify those involved and bring them to justice, he added.
