A trader was stabbed to death allegedly by muggers in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area early Saturday.

Ashish Joardar, 32, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition around 1:30am, but doctors declared him dead. Ashish, a cloth trader, was from Paturia village in Magura Sadar upazila.

The incident took place in front of the wholesale market in Jatrabari.

One of the muggers sustained injuries after being hit by a bus while fleeing with a snatched mobile phone and money.

Al-Amin, a pedestrian who took the victim to the hospital, said that Ashish was walking near the market around 1 am under the Jatrabari flyover when a group of two to three muggers stopped him and stabbed him.

When Ashish cried out for help, people nearby rushed to the scene, forcing the assailants to flee. Ashish was then rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Inspector Md Faruk, also in-charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed Ashish’s death and said that his body was sent to the DMCH morgue. The incident has been reported to Jatrabari Police Station.
