Locals brought out a torch procession in Teknaf on Monday evening, protesting border unrest and condemning recent incidents of gunfire from Myanmar that injured a child and a landmine blast that wounded a fisherman.
The protest march was organised around 7pm at Whykong Bazar in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
People from various professions, along with students, participated in the protest. They demanded effective measures from the authorities concerned to ensure security in the bordering area.
Teknaf Whykong Police Outpost In-charge Khokon Chandra Rudro, also a sub-inspector, said, “Vehicle movement on the main road was halted for about an hour during the demonstration. Upon receiving the news, police went to the scene and brought the situation under control.”
Around 10am on Monday, a Bangladeshi fisherman was injured in a landmine explosion in the area. It has been alleged that members of the rebel group Arakan Army from Myanmar planted the landmine.
Earlier, Afnan, 9, was seriously injured by gunfire originating from Myanmar in the Techchhi Bridge area of Whykong around 9am on Sunday. He is currently undergoing treatment in the ICU of Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
