Veteran British actor Tom Chadbon, best known for his memorable roles in Doctor Who, Game of Thrones and numerous television dramas, has died at the age of 80, writes BBC.
The Luton-born actor’s death was confirmed by Fantom Events, a publishing and events company he frequently collaborated with.
In a statement shared on social media, the company described Chadbon as “a warm and friendly man to work with” and extended condolences to his family.
Chadbon enjoyed a television career spanning nearly five decades, becoming a familiar face across British screens.
One of his most celebrated performances came in the 1979 Doctor Who serial City of Death, where he starred opposite Tom Baker as private detective Duggan.
Set in Paris, the story revolved around a plot to steal the Mona Lisa and featured a cameo from John Cleese.
Co-written by Douglas Adams, the episode remains the most-watched in Doctor Who history, attracting more than 16 million viewers.
He returned to the long-running sci-fi series in 1986, portraying Merdeen alongside Colin Baker in The Mysterious Planet.
Beyond Doctor Who, Chadbon built an extensive résumé with appearances in popular television series including Peep Show, The Bill, Midsomer Murders and Where the Heart Is.
In 1997, he featured in ITV’s adaptation of Rebecca alongside Charles Dance, Diana Rigg and Emilia Fox.
From 2008 to 2011, Chadbon played Henry Williams, the hospital’s director of critical care, in the long-running medical drama Casualty.
Film audiences also saw him in 1974’s The Beast Must Die and in a small role in the 2006 Casino Royale, starring Daniel Craig.
His final television appearance came in 2017, when he portrayed High Septon Maynard in HBO’s Game of Thrones.
Chadbon’s death marks the end of a distinguished acting career that left a lasting impression across British television, film and science fiction fandom.
