Three people, including two sisters, were killed and two others injured in a head-on collision between a covered van and a CNG-run autorickshaw in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Monday afternoon.
The accident occurred at around 2:45pm in the Madhyam Khuniapalong area under Khuniapalong union.
The deceased sisters were identified as Shahnaz Begum, 40, and Rubin Begum, 42, daughters of Jafar Alam of Harinmara in Rajapalong union of Ukhiya upazila. The identity of the other victim, a man, could not be known immediately.
Police said the two injured people were passengers of the autorickshaw.
Ramu Highway Crossing Police Station Inspector Sukanta Chakraborty, quoting local residents, said the Cox’s Bazar-bound covered van collided head-on with the autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction.
The impact left the autorickshaw badly mangled, killing two people on the spot and injuring three others, including its driver.
Local residents rescued the injured and took them to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared another person dead, he said.
The covered van’s driver and his assistant fled the scene after the accident. Police, however, seized both vehicles.
The bodies were kept at the hospital morgue, while legal proceedings were under way, the inspector added.
