Every culture has learned to make the body speak in prophecy. Itching palms, twitching eyes, marks on nails and skin are often read as signs of money, travel or news. Bengali superstition is no exception. The impulse is universal: turn small bodily glitches into meaning. The body, however, has its own explanations, and they are less poetic.
Handy money
Right palm itches: money arrives. Left palm itches: money leaves. The system is simple, requiring only belief and scratching.
Medically, this is often dermographism, a condition affecting a small percentage of people in which pressure on the skin triggers histamine release, causing redness and itch. Palms are especially sensitive due to constant friction from daily use. Stress, heat and anxiety can worsen it. The more worried you are about money, the more you scratch. The interpretation follows naturally, but the cause is physical, not financial.
Flying feet
A mole on the foot is sometimes read as a sign of travel. It is a melanocytic nevus, caused by localised clusters of pigment cells shaped by genetics and chance. There is no link between moles and movement, only coincidence and metaphor: the foot that walks become the site of imagined journeys.
Sight and spasm
Left eye twitching is widely interpreted as an omen in many cultures. Medically, it is myokymia, a minor involuntary contraction of the eyelid muscle, usually triggered by fatigue, caffeine, stress or screen strain. It is common and harmless. Across cultures, the meaning changes, but the muscle does not.
Midriff memories
Hiccups are often romanticised as signs that someone is thinking of you. In fact, they are involuntary contractions of the diaphragm, followed by sudden closure of the vocal cords. Triggers include eating too quickly, fizzy drinks or irritation of the nerves involved in breathing. Persistent cases can last days, but the mechanism remains mechanical, not emotional.
Freebie fingers
White spots on nails are often taken as signs of coming gifts or luck. In most cases, they are punctate leukonychia, caused by minor trauma to the nail matrix. The injury is usually forgotten long before the spot appears weeks later and grows out with the nail over months.
The structure behind all these interpretations is the same, a small, ordinary bodily event is stripped of biology and filled with desire. Money, travel, connection, good news.
It is not irrationality so much as interpretation under uncertainty. The body is rarely speaking in symbols. It is usually just working. The itch is an itch. The twitch is a twitch. The meaning is added later, because meaning is what we prefer to hear.
