Telecom Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam has urged Grameenphone (GP) to take effective measures to address customer concerns over call drops, network quality and the pricing of voice and data packages, saying service providers must ensure quality services while pursuing business growth.
The minister made the remarks at the launch of GP’s “Digital Inclusion for Marginalized Communities – Phase II” programme at Sheraton Dhaka in Banani on Thursday, according to a statement from the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology.
Faqir Mahbub Anam said telecom operators must give equal importance to customer expectations and interests, as affordable, uninterrupted and reliable connectivity is essential for Bangladesh’s digital transformation.
“Business growth is important, but customer expectations and interests must receive equal attention,” he said, calling on service providers to make customer service a priority.
The minister said digital technology must reach every citizen, particularly women, youth, persons with disabilities, transgender people and other marginalised communities, so they can participate in the country’s digital transformation and benefit from new opportunities.
He also called for expanding telecom services in remote and underserved areas, saying no region should be left behind in the digital transition.
Highlighting Bangladesh’s target of becoming a $1 trillion economy by 2034, Faqir Mahbub Anam said meaningful digital inclusion, digital literacy and skilled human resources would be critical to achieving the goal.
GP’s Phase II initiative aims to expand digital skills and access to education, government services, financial services and digital livelihood opportunities among vulnerable communities.
GP CEO Yasir Azman, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Chairman Major General (Retd) Md Emdad Ul Bari, government officials, private sector representatives and development partners attended the event.
