At least five people were killed and 23 others injured after Russia launched a wave of overnight missile strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region on Thursday, Ukrainian authorities said.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS) said apartment blocks and warehouses were hit in the “massive attack,” reports BBC.
Rescue teams were searching through the rubble of destroyed buildings for survivors and had already pulled one person alive from the debris.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a children’s hospital was among the sites damaged in the strikes. Windows were shattered and several cars caught fire nearby.
Missiles also struck an industrial centre in the Solomyanskyi district in south-west Kyiv, Klitschko said.
In the wider Kyiv region, one man was killed and another injured in an attack on Brovary district, according to Kyiv regional governor Tymur Tkachenko.
The regional administration had earlier urged residents to seek shelter and warned, “Air defense operations are possible in the area”.
Further missile alerts were issued by regional authorities following warnings from the Ukrainian air force.
The strikes also disrupted electricity supplies to thousands of properties overnight, leaving parts of the Kyiv region without power as repair crews worked to restore the damaged energy network.
Kyiv has faced almost nightly Russian attacks in recent weeks, with some strikes killing dozens and leaving many others seriously injured.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian missile and drone attacks on Russia have intensified, adding to pressure on Moscow to enter peace talks aimed at ending the four-and-a-half-year war.
Two separate attacks on Russia this week have killed at least 16 people, including a child.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and now controls about one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, much of it in the eastern border regions.
