Former national cricket captain Tamim Iqbal has called on the public to give Bangladesh’s newly sworn-in government time to implement meaningful change, stressing that nothing happens overnight.
On Tuesday afternoon, Tarique Rahman took the oath as the new Prime Minister at the South Plaza of the National Parliament building, while the President administered oaths to the new ministers and state ministers. Tamim Iqbal attended the ceremony and later spoke to a television channel about his expectations for the government.
“This government needs time; nothing can happen quickly,” Tamim said. “It is very important to bring the right people into the right positions. Everyone’s security, across all aspects of life will be restored. We have been hoping for about a year and a half that a political government would take office.”
He added, “Every citizen’s hopes should be fulfilled, and I believe this government must be given the opportunity to deliver. For anything good to happen, time is essential. I hope the people of Bangladesh will allow them that time to do the best they can for the country.”
Tamim also highlighted the importance of sports in national development. “My expectation is that capable people will be placed where they are best suited, whether for football or any other sport. Bringing the right people into the right roles is crucial because sports play a key role for Bangladesh,” he said.
He continued, “For every citizen, I hope that those in positions of responsibility or those who will take responsibility will do the right things. Even if someone has been involved in politics for many years, it does not mean they cannot contribute to sports. Anyone who works for the development of sport, if they deserve the role, should be entrusted with it.”
